“Don’t believe me! Try it!” A workshop with Prema Mysore

Energy is invisible, an unseen force on which everything exists - it has information and knowledge. It can be transmitted, transported, transformed and transferred. Energy is life force. Energy is everywhere and in everything. As Prema Mysore puts it, “We are one giant bowl of spaghetti energy”.

This Saturday, the Temple hosted a workshop on Energy Management System (EMS) - Self Healing with Bio-Energy and Acupressure held by the benevolent and lively Prema Mysore. Full of anecdotes, testimonies, and profound teachings and knowledge, she is inspiring. She weaves stories of seemingly absurd and mind boggling events, where she has facilitated healing people through something as simple as coloring blue marker on the thumb to lower someone’s high blood pressure- a therapy accurately named color therapy. Some may find this difficult to believe- but Prema never asks any of us in the workshop to take her at face value. As she tells her testimonies, she scans our faces, mouths ajar, in shock, amazement, and slight confusion. “Don’t believe me!” she says. “Try it! Experience it yourselves!”

So who is Prema Mysore? Her credentials and experience run a mile long. But the real story started when she was dealing with her own health issues and pain years ago. She packed her bags and headed to India, where she would begin her journey and study the ways of energy healing. In short, she took charge of her health and wellness and put in into her own hands. Now Prema travels back and forth from India to the United States sharing her profound knowledge on non-invasive healing with others. She makes a point to remind everyone that none of this is secret. She wants everyone to share her knowledge.

Prema states that she is completely pain free and has been now for many, many years. She says that even if she had pain- she would know how to fix it. This astonishes me. As someone who deals with chronic back and hip pain- I was aching--pun intended--to know her secrets. Why do so many of us deal with pain and fatigue? Why do we constantly feel like we have no energy- or that we run out of it too quickly?

Prema does a wonderful job providing metaphors to help her students understand the concepts better. On her powerpoint, she first displays an image of a monetary bank- something everyone is familiar with- a place where we place our money. She then brings up a picture of the body and asks us if we are aware that we are also a bank.

Our body is an energy bank that we are constantly depositing and taking out from. We deposit energy through food, sleep, water, meditation, the sun, breath, exercise, etc. We spend our energy through our emotions, thoughts, environments and people. Often time, we are spending much more than we are depositing. Pain or fatigue is a result of disturbances of energy flow in the body- a block. Prema says disturbances can occur in the energy circulation in 5 different ways:

  1. Excess

  2. Deficiency

  3. Stagnation

  4. Contravection

  5. Impediments

SO, how do we heal these disturbances? First and foremost, Prema says, DO NOT ignore the body. When the body is ignored the problem continues to manifest, which turns into a condition- an accumulation of toxins. Listening is vital. Second, there are MANY different types of energy healing techniques: Yoga, Meditation, Pranayama, Pranic healing, Reiki, Crystal healing etc. It is clear that even a 6 hour workshop cannot begin to cover the amount of information she knows.

In this workshop, she chose to focus on the hands, among several other healing techniques, as it is very simple and covers 38 points in the hand. Acupressure therapy is the technique of applying pressure on points of the body to relieve pain. Prema says that the hand is a map of the body. Every point on the hand is in direct correlation with a specific organ or part of the body.

Prema has us begin with the first four points on her hand. The first point is the brain. The second, the mental nerves. The third and fourth are the pituitary and pineal glands. All these points are on different areas of the thumb. She has us grab a partner and begin to press on points 3 and 4 on our partner. Then our partner reciprocates.

Then she has us repeat the process, but this time, with a slight modification. Before we worked on our partners pressure point, we were instructed to meditate on the person- to focus on the intent of healing the other. I proceeded to close my eyes and recite over and over in my head: “I wish to heal this person.” IT WAS AMAZING. It was a drastic difference in overall feeling and experience. Why?

Prema says: “No tree eats it’s own fruit. No river drinks it’s own water. No sun enjoys it’s own sunlight. Giving is a part of nature. You are a part of nature. You can’t give someone a hug without getting one. You can’t heal someone and not also be healed.”

And in that single saying, in those simple words she spoke-she changed me entirely. I could feel the transformation flow through me. This therapy, this healing, is not just a physical action. It is a way of life. It is a lifestyle of choosing to give and heal and grow.

“Don’t believe me! Try it! Experience it for yourself!”
