Notes on Practice
Quarter two month five Notes on Practice, which is included as a resource for this lesson, discusses asana in relationship to prana. This article is an overview, which is meant to stimulate further study. The pranic model of asana practice is often disregarded by teachers. Though you may not choose to introduce the subject to your students, it is important that you understand the concepts involved.
From the lesson:
"At the base of the spine in the Muladhara chakra is a pranic force
called kundalini. Kundalini is referred to as an evolutionary energy
which is tremendously powerful. Rather than being drawn in from the
outside, this energy is already within us, though dormant or sleeping.
One of the goals of yoga is to awaken this latent pranic force and
consciously lift it up the central Sushumna nadi to Sahasrara, the
thousand-petaled lotus."

"The biggest singular obstacle to sense withdrawal is attachment.
One is supposed to learn various techniques to being detached.
My guru used to — all his food would be put on the plate nicely.
He would push it to the center and cut it. Then he would eat three
quarters and leave one quarter." - Goswami Kriyananda

Learning them will help motivate you to practice as well as understand which types of postures will be most beneficial to individual needs. The list of the benefits of forward bends is only a sample. Research is always making new discoveries about the health benefits of all of the asanas. |
Reading Assignment - Benefits of Forward Bends
Please read and study the PDF document "Benefits of Forward Bends." One way to memorize the benefits of an asana is to repeat one of them out loud just before you do the asana. Then, the next day, repeat a different benefit, and so on. In this way, you’ll memorize the benefits of each asana in a few months and you’ll be able to offer yourself and others more motivation to practice as well as more understanding of the tremendous health benefits of doing yoga.
